# Is it safe to swim in Lake Erie?

> It depends on the beach and the day. State and provincial health departments test Lake Erie beaches for bacteria and post advisories, including during harmful algal blooms, and waves can be dangerous. This site never reports current conditions, so check the official beach program before you swim.

## Why beach advice changes

Water quality at a Lake Erie beach can change within a day. The EPA points to heavy urban and agricultural runoff and to the large volume of treated sewage effluent the lake receives, more than any other Great Lake.[1] In summer, harmful algal blooms can form, mostly in the warm western basin, and some produce toxins.[1,2] Health departments sample beaches and post advisories or closures when results or blooms call for it, so the same beach can be fine one day and posted the next.

## Waves, currents and cold water

Lake Erie is shallow, and its waves build quickly in a strong wind; NOAA notes that the lake is prone to seiches, wind-driven surges that can raise or lower water levels by several feet.[3] Piers and breakwaters can be swept by waves. Swim at guarded beaches where you can, stay off piers and breakwaters in rough weather, and keep a close eye on children.

## What this site covers instead

Lake Erie Gazetteer is a reference, not a conditions service. We explain the background that does not change from day to day: why the lake grows algal blooms, how warm it usually is in each month, how often it freezes, and how seiches move its water. For anything that changes with the weather, the beach programs and forecasters listed here publish the official word. If a link has stopped working, tell us through the corrections form and we will replace it.

## Official sources for conditions now

We never report current conditions. For today's beach advisories, bloom status and weather, use the official sources below. Each state and province runs its own beach monitoring, and NOAA forecasts harmful algal blooms on the lake. The list below links to them; it does not mean those agencies endorse this site.

## Questions people ask

**Can you swim in Lake Erie?**

Yes, at many public beaches in summer, but conditions change. Check the state or provincial beach advisory for the beach you plan to visit before you go in.

**Why are Lake Erie beaches sometimes closed?**

Usually because tests show high bacteria after heavy rain, or because of a harmful algal bloom. Health departments post advisories; this site does not report them.
