About Lake Erie Gazetteer
Lake Erie Gazetteer is an independent reference to the lake's lighthouses, shipwrecks and physical facts, covering all five shores: Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan and Ontario. A gazetteer is a geographical dictionary, one entry per place, and that is what this is: every lighthouse and documented shipwreck we could source, and short answers to the lake's common questions.
Every fact on the site comes from a published source, and every page lists its sources with the date we checked them. Numbers come from public data such as the U.S. EPA's Great Lakes figures and NOAA's temperature and ice records. Histories come from records like the National Register of Historic Places, the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes at Bowling Green State University, Ohio Sea Grant's shipwreck trail and Canadian heritage registers. We cite Wikipedia where it is the best available source and say so.
The site is run by WeldonPC, a small technology business in Ohio. It is paid for by the printable guides in the shop and by clearly labeled sponsor listings from local businesses. One banner ad on most pages comes from AdEngine, WeldonPC's own small ad network; it sets no cookies (see Privacy). There are no tracking cookies or newsletters, and the site never sells wreck coordinates.
We don't report current conditions, opening hours, prices or fishing rules. Those change daily, and the official sources linked on each page are the place to check them.
How the pages are researched, dated and corrected is set out on the methodology page.
