The white cast-iron tower at the end of Cleveland's west pier has marked the main entrance to the city's harbour since 1911. Still an active light with a fog signal, it is best seen from the lakefront plaza behind the Great Lakes Science Center, and its future owner is being decided.
History
A light has stood at the west pierhead of Cleveland's harbour entrance since 1884. According to the Lighthouse Directory, the first one was a used tower brought from the west pierhead at Rochester, New York.[2] When the breakwater was extended in 1911 that older light was demolished and replaced by the present station.[2,3]
The 1911 tower is a round cast-iron structure about 67 feet tall, the 'sparkplug' type common at Great Lakes pierheads, with keeper's quarters inside and a cast-iron fog-signal building attached.[2,3] Ohio Sea Grant notes that the steam fog signal could be heard 12 miles away, and that a keeper and two assistants lived at the station from 1910.[3] The light was automated in 1965. Its fourth-order Fresnel lens was taken out in 1995 and is on display at the Great Lakes Science Center, a short walk from where visitors stand to look at the tower.[3,2]
The Coast Guard still runs the light and horn. The September 2026 Light List shows a red flash every six seconds at a focal height of 63 feet, from a white conical tower with an attached fog-signal building.[1] The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.[4]
Finding a new owner has been slow. The federal government offered the lighthouse free to qualified groups under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2007, 2010 and 2021 without success, and then sold it at auction in 2023.[2] That sale did not close. In 2026 the lighthouse was offered for transfer again, and several groups, including a new local collective, applied.[5,2] The pier does not connect to shore, so the tower is seen from the lakefront or from harbour cruises.[2]
