A 60-foot sandstone tower beside a brick keeper's house, the Grand River light at Fairport Harbor guided ships from 1871 until 1925. Saved by local residents, it has been a maritime museum since the 1940s, and visitors can climb its spiral stairs.
History
Fairport Harbor grew up at the mouth of the Grand River, and by the 1820s steamboats and schooners were calling there often enough that residents asked Washington for harbour improvements.[2] Congress provided money for a lighthouse and a pier at the river mouth in 1824 and 1825, and the first tower, about thirty feet high with an octagonal iron lantern, was finished in 1825 along with a two-storey keeper's house.[2,3]
Both buildings decayed, and in 1871 they were replaced on the same site. The new tower, of sandstone, was lit on August 11, 1871.[2] Ohio's historical marker at the museum credits the 1825 buildings to Jonathan Goldsmith and identifies the stone of the present tower as Berea sandstone.[4] Because it stands on high ground above the lake, its fixed white light shone from 102 feet above the water through a third-order Fresnel lens, and Wikipedia records that it could be seen about 18 miles away.[2] The Lighthouse Directory notes that it is a sibling of the Erie Land Lighthouse in Pennsylvania.[5]
In 1925 a new combined light and fog signal at the end of the west breakwater took over, and the old station was expected to be torn down. Letters from local residents saved it.[2] In 1945 the Fairport Harbor Historical Society was founded to turn the lighthouse into a maritime museum, and the village took ownership the same year.[5,2] The National Register of Historic Places listed the lighthouse and keeper's house in 1971.[6]
The museum in the keeper's house displays navigation instruments, lenses, ship models and exhibits on the salt and iron-ore trades that built the port.[7] A spiral staircase of 69 steps climbs the tower to an observation platform, which the society opens to visitors in season and to groups by appointment.[3,8]
